Bargoed Colliery Site Cleared

After the site had been cleared one of the last things to go was the old foot bridge
which you can see in the distance

I always used to be scared walking acroos that bridge when Iwas a little girl as quite a few sections of the side panels had rusted away and you peep through and see the long drop to the floor and I hated it !!

I used to hate that bridge when I was a little girl, half way across the metal side panels had rusted away and you could see the long long drop to the ground below !!

I have fond memories of living in Bargoed Hall for 31years from 1968-1999.
My memories of the colliery before 1977 when it was winding down before its eventual closure are quite vivid. Those huge cooling towers and winding gear situated infront of Europes largest coal tip.
From the Pink House on Aberbargoed Hill right through to Angel lane on the opposite end was nearly two miles in length, then it was a real adventure playground for the youngster like me.This was long before Health & safety came in.

Certain areas were trully dangerous, especially the open mine shafts that had very little protection.

During the days when the tip was still standing i would climb to the very top.How many tons of waste coal there must have been there i would love to know.

During the late seventies when winters were real winters Angel Lane would always become blocked by snow. How the small farm holding in the middle used to cope i cannot imagine.

What will now become of Bargoed with the opening of this bypass.

It was always on a rollercoaster ride from prosperity to neglect.

I still visit Penpedairheol to see friends and feel sorry for the town, but i can honestly say those 31years were some of the happiest of my life.
