After the colliery closed in 1977 the WDA funded a multi million pound reclamation scheme.

Using some of the tip waste to form a plateau for a new primary school.

The Rhymney River was diverted and in places covered by tunnels to make a larger area for the proposed Bargoed By Pass.

The tip once the largest in Europe was partially reclaimed with thousands of tons of waste distributed throughout the old colliery site.
